Referral for diagnosis and management
People with a possible diagnosis of dementia should be offered a referral to memory assessment specialist for a comprehensive assessment.
For a typical presentation, referral may not be necessary. If there is any doubt a referral to CDAMS (Cognitive Dementia and Memory Service) or consultation with a geriatrician, psychogeriatrician or neurologist can confirm the diagnosis. [1]
Referral to specialist diagnostic services is required if:
- Unsure of diagnosis
- Patient is young or atypical
- Symptoms and signs are atypical
- Psychotic or severe behavioural disturbance occur
- Multiple, complex co-morbidities exist
- Or considering medication [2]
